Dog by GregStevens Dog by GregStevens
A portrait of Dog, the incidental character appearing in "Johnny Mnemonic" by William Gibson. The description of the character is: "He might have been fifteen, but the fangs and a bright mosaic of scars combined with the gaping [eye] socket to present a mask of total bestiality.... He wore a pair of decaying jeans, black with grime and shiny along the creases."

I wanted to make sure not to present him as "ugly" per se. It is important that this character has chosen his "look" because it REPRESENTS him. This isn't self-hatred, this is expression. His self-decoration makes him look different, not worse, when you see him through his own eyes.

From a technical standpoint, this was an experiment in taking advantage of one of the features of digital drawing: being able to zoom in and out to really vary the level of detail and the size of your pen stroke. This is the same simulated medium (conte crayon), but I vastly varied the zoom level to achieve different levels of detail for different areas.
